A night amongst the stars with your friends, new and old. DJ playing out the latest tunes, disco ball spinning, dancing, food and drinks, plus a game room with pool table, foosball, and Nintendo Switch when you need a break from all the boogieing. Bring a date, come with your besties, or just show up on your own, whichever way you attend your Prom you're going to have a night to remember!

Dawn Fung met up with American homeschooler Shannon Palmer. Shannon is the founder of a homeschool teen expat group in Singapore. She will organize the Homeschool Prom on 21 May 2020 for the community. Information and tickets will be out soon.
This is one of many activities for homeschool teens this year. The homeschool teen scene is growing so fast!

Just this Monday, we had the pleasure of having Bryan Tan as this month's Guest Speaker. He is the CEO of Dads for Life and the Centre for Fathering. Formerly a senior officer with the Singapore Armed Forces, Bryan made a mid-career switch to the social service sector to serve fathers and the “fatherless” in our nation.

Bryan shared with us the redemptive stories of many in Singapore and his own story as well. Not only that, but we found out more about the various movements happening around us to bring families together!

Last Friday, the leadership team of Homeschool Singapore went to MOE HQ to talk to officials about homeschooling matters, especially the interactions on the ground with the Compulsory Education Unit (CEU) inspectors that some homeschool families have found difficult to engage, and the benchmark for SEN kids (who are struggling but still required to hit the higher-than-average score than the national passing mark. Could we revise the benchmark for this demography?). The 1.5h dialogue helped us understand that MOE's vision is holistic education (which is also our passion as parent educators). We heard the concerns of MOE's CEU that every child has to be responsibly attended to in matters of education. CEU inspectors work hard to ensure every child has an opportunity for schooling. Their work includes children who are not being homeschooled but are neglected at home. As for the benchmark for SEN kids, the verdict is in the air. (The 2019 CE act for SEN kids is a recent thing. We hope more statistics and evidenced based research might help move the dialogue forward in the coming years.) Homeschooling families do not follow the MOE syllabus until closer to PSLE. This is so that we use our time available to give our children customised care. The foundations of learning are rooted in familial relationships. Family of origins, after all, affects us in all ways into adulthood. If we focus on building a healthy, holistic environment for children to learn, we can nip in the bud some mental illnesses and negative disaffection that plagues the workforce today.
Many times, the differences between state and family values clash in a suspicious us-vs-them engagement. Perhaps it is time for homeschooling families to be visible in their approaches to learning so that from the grounds up, we can help bridge the knowledge gap on our side. Share on social media. Hop on initiatives to collaborate on public platforms in education, parenting and skills based learning. As the education landscape dynamically changes in the next 10 years from traditional classroom teaching, let's work together on a civic conscious Singapore where all children prosper.

What a lovely memory from the "Not Back to School" picnic on the first day of school in Singapore. While mainstream parents were happily snapping photos of uniformed P1 kids on their big adventure, we had our version. (This image captured only a slice of the camaraderie and restful gathering. Not too long ago, we had the great pleasure of listening Tong Yee share on his many experiences in his work!

Tong Yee is a social entrepreneur and civil society leader here in Singapore. Having initially co-founded the School of Thought to promote innovation in character education and civic learning, he now leads The Thought Collective which is one of the largest groups of social enterprises in Singapore. Because of its largely reputed work in social capital and social infrastructure development, Tong Yee often finds himself sought after as an inspiring and innovative thought leader that leads in all manner of community and organizational development.
Not only answering our burning questions, Tong Yee also shared on his own interesting experiences. He described some thought-provoking issues in community that gave us a glimpse of how important it is for Singaporeans to work together. #schoolofthought #thoughtcollective #hssg #littleu

Just this Monday, we were delighted to hear from lawyer Luo Ling Ling, who arrived with style on her motorbike in boots and her lawyer suit. We were very much enlightened by her interesting narrations and new perspectives on lawyers!

Ling Ling enjoys working on complex criminal matters, with a focus on white collar crimes and capital offences. Notably, she was appointed Amicus Curiae by the High Court in the case of PP v Gunasilan in 2017, to conduct cross-examination of the Prosecution’s witness in a capital offence. In PP versus Alfian bin Abdul Rahim and another in 2018, Ling Ling saved a man from the gallows after a full trial in a drug trafficking charge, while the other accused person in the same trial was sentenced to death.

Ling Ling gave us a fresh view of the life of a lawyer and answered our many questions with patience. By the end, our many curiosities and queries were answered!

It was a real treat to meet 71 year-old Sandi Hokyo and hear her life experience.
She was a pioneer in the Hawaiian homeschooling movement, worked 35 years with handicapped children as a physiotherapist, and has handled about 300 births as a doula. She inspired all of us that afternoon in our journey.

We just had our talk on Monday by the wonderful couple, Drs. Tan Siong San and Rebecca Yap!

Dr. Tan Siong San is a Surgeon who specialises in Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB). His wife, Rebecca Yap, is a GP who was trained in Paediatrics. We listened to their thrilling experiences in the medical field and discovered how it is like to always be on call to save lives.
We all had a good laugh from hearing their hilarious narrations!

When you apply to homeschool in Singapore as a Singaporean, you have to get the Compulsory Education exemption form. (“C.E” is the abbreviation for Compulsory Education. When homeschoolers say, “It’s time to apply for CE”, it’s short form for saying, “It’s that time of the year to get the application form from MOE to get exempted from CE.”) In The C.E Talk, we walk you through how to apply for CE exemption, and how this can be a meaningful way to document your own homeschooling journey. Each year’s C.E. Talk will feature a panel of homeschoolers whose stories will help assure those seeking an alternative education pathway for their children.

Homeschooler Abigail Teo is 15 this year. She is the coordinator of Little U's Guest Speaker Series with Jordan Teo @jawrdun.
She says, "The sessions give us the opportunity to hear the testimonies of people who are highly experienced in their fields. I learnt about the difficulties they faced and how they found ways to overcome. They are willing to accept questions from tweens, and provide us insight into their lives. We have just finished our first Guest Speaker Series with Jason Wong! Jason Wong initiated the Yellow Ribbon Project in 2004 and the Dads for Life movement in 2009. He shared his many amazing experiences with us and talked about his heart for the underprivileged.

We were inspired. After the talk, one of the moms commented, "I took away his humility, love for people, dogged determination, and helpful mindset of being faithful with little and trusting God to enlarge our influence...His life speaks more than his words."

Jason Wong currently volunteers his time to mentor youths through the programme, @famchamps . We will be getting a group of homeschoolers to participate in the Famchamps' end of year camp. Please watch the space for more details!
