What is The Birthday Book? The Birthday Book is What is The Birthday Book?

The Birthday Book is an annual publication that invites a diverse group of people to pen their thoughts around a central theme for the year. It was first launched in 2016, fuelled by a desire to ignite a conversation about things that matter to Singapore.

Both the senior and junior book projects are the flagship offering of The Birthday Collective, an NPO started with the desire to create platforms that encourage and facilitate conversations about the things that matter to us; constructive, creative and critical discussions about a myriad of issues that impact us all. Staffed entirely by volunteers, The Collective have several other platforms including a video competition with ITE and Polytechnics, a Singapore food related one that was chosen to be incorporated in the UNESCO bid , seminars, workshops and even a critical thinking resource.

What are the editors of the Children’s Edition this year looking for?

“This year’s prompt is— 20/20: Seeing Clearly. We are interested in having our young friends share a pertinent life story with us, through which lessons can be learnt, issues that surface can be discussed. We are hoping that each child contributor is able to create their own response by themselves (with minimal or no parental involvement) so we do encourage parents to give the child as much independent space as possible.”

Online Worldschoolmates Programme ==== Homeschoo Online Worldschoolmates Programme
====

Homeschooling mum Ira Sophia is starting an online Worldschoolmates Programme.

“Some Indonesian homeschooling teens home-stayed with a few homeschooling families here at the end of 2019. It was an amazing experience for all the families involved. For our programme, we would look at projects/research themes that would promote self-directed learning. The ideas will come from the kids. Topics can be in science, technology, engineering, art, math, social, cultural, economy, politics or anything else they think of. We will invite professionals occasionally to share their expertise.”

The Online Worldschoolmates Programme is looking for :
- 10 Indonesian homeschoolers aged 8-11
- 10 Indonesian homeschoolers aged 11 onwards
- 10 Singapore-based homeschoolers aged 8-11
- 10 Singapore-based homeschoolers aged 11 onwards

Parents will need to help with coaching and mentoring. If you’re interested, please contact ira.sophia@gmail.com
Sometime back, our talented homegrown artist, Pang Sometime back, our talented homegrown artist, Pang, was commissioned by National Arts Council (NAC) for a submission of an artwork for the Streets of Hope Exhibition. The exhibition serves to encourage and lift the spirits as we stand united during this pandemic.

Pang contacted Dawn, founder of Homeschool Singapore, for submissions of artwork from our homeschooling children.

In Pang’s words:

“My response to Streets of Hope has been driven by the conviction that we should look at the current situation through the eyes of children and youth- the future of our nation. There has been a recent focus on how adults are managing and containing COVID-19, perhaps is it time for us adults to find hope through  children’s drawings and to get what is possibly the best form of community healing.

Hope For the Future

Faith in our Healthcare Heroes

Love for our Community

The artworks below contain messages from young voices of Singapore that are beyond words.

They are the responses of Isabel Joy Koh, 7, Joshua Hoy, 10 and Faith Ang, 17. They do have a lot to say, don’t they?”

Tammy Hitchens @homehawker is a homeschooling mum with 14 kids, aged between four months and 29 years. On the outside, Tammy seems to have it all: a large, happy family with her loving husband Timothy, and a beautiful rental landed home in Singapore.
.
But Tammy has also struggled through motherhood at times, overcoming poverty, illness, exhaustion, and coping with her children’s special needs.
.
In the interview with Dayre, Tammy shares how she found peace within herself — even after 14 kids — and why she feels being a mum was her destiny all along.

Hi all! It’s been 2 weeks since #hsdsg2020 and i Hi all! It’s been 2 weeks since #hsdsg2020 and it’s been a pleasure speaking to you. We can’t wait for next year’s event, what about you?! This is a series about that, how parents connect with their children at home during this time, and why parenting the heart - of both adult and child - is important work. Featuring 96 anonymous writers sharing poignantly about their parenting journey, PARENTING THE HEART is chicken soup for the haggard mum.

Raising children is not a bed of roses. It is a garden of blooms, a different lesson for every season. It is a cultivation of years of sweat and toil, for a reward that money cannot buy. Let’s remember the best things in life this May.
DADs@HOME: THANK YOU! To all the dads who have be DADs@HOME: THANK YOU!

To all the dads who have been working from home, thank you for trying your best to ensure things work out at home. While there are moments of frustrations, overwhelm, or even loss of personal space, we want to thank you for hanging in there with your family.
.
As a wrap up to our DADs@HOME series, we will like to dedicate the following poem that is written by our talented homeschool mum, Madeline @MadaboutGod to you:

Dear DADs@HOME,

It’s not often that

We see so much of dads;

But at such a time as this,

It’s just where we’re at!
.

Tho’ you can’t bring us

To our favourite mall;

But you’re right here for us

When we urgently call!
.

Tho’ you can’t play and bask

With us under the sun;

Still you’d make time to add

Some laughter and fun!
.

It’s not easy for you

To juggle work and home;

But you try your best when

With us or working alone.
.

So now we just wanna say

That we appreciate you;

For the big and little

Thoughtful things you do!

Luv,

Your KIDs@HOME (btw, Mommy helped in writing the poem too!;)) #SGUnited #StayHome #WorkFromHome #DadsAtHome
DADs @ HOME: When WFH Becomes WATT Time seems to DADs @ HOME: When WFH Becomes WATT

Time seems to have come to a standstill. For many fathers who have to WFH, life has practically become WATT (Work All The Time). Being self-employed in a time of Covid-19 has been very hard for me. I have to attempt newer and innovative ways to earn a living, with no guarantees of getting any remuneration.

Finances weigh heavily on my mind. When my kids approach me to play with them, I cannot help but think of the work that I need to do.  Often I tell them that “Daddy needs to work”, and retreat to my safe house, which is my computer screen. But I can hear the sadness in their voices, as they tell me “It’s OK,” and turn away to find Mummy instead.

As a counsellor, I know it’s unhealthy to continually turn away my kids. I know they need their father with them and not just merely around them. It is a fallacy to assume that since we spend more physical time with our kids, that it is sufficient to meet their needs.

How do I manage this juggling act without having all the balls crash onto the floor? It’s about learning the rhythm of my kids. My older son, Z, wakes up early. I will enjoy a precious father-son time with him at sun-up. After a game, I’m in the kitchen in a jiffy to prepare his favourite sunny-side egg for breakfast. Then it’s off to managing the myriad of tasks that cry for my attention.

The younger son E wakes up much later, and the boys have school with my wife. After lunch, I factor in some 1-on-1 time with the younger child. And it’s back to my work for the rest of the afternoon.

It’s family time after dinner, and we gather for something special. Family time is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the kids, and to ask them questions on the things that matter in life.

There really is no hard-and-fast-rule to balance the competing demands. All I know is that my family matters the most to me. If I keep that perspective, I wouldn’t choose to WATT even if I have to WFH during the CB. - Mark is dad to 2 lovable boys and husband to a doting wife. He provides counselling during the COVID-19 season, and is contactable at mark.thesocialfactor@gmail.com [Story edited. Follow profile link for full article]
DADs@HOME: Mindset and Communication I had opport DADs@HOME: Mindset and Communication

I had opportunities to work from home (WFH), so I find myself slightly more prepared for this period. There was a lot of trial and error initially. With WFH, I observed I have been able to get most of my work done during the boys’ naps and bedtime.
READ: Kids are most active when they wake up in the morning.

I spend time with them in the morning and explain when it is my turn to work. This doesn’t imply that work isn’t important, but by giving the kids my attention first, they are then able to play by themselves (or bother each other). After I fill their love tanks, they are less likely to disturb me.

My kids love reading and story time, so without fail, there will be at least one pocket of time when I read to them, or tell them a story, or they would do their own silent reading.

Watching them doing activities, crafts, or playing games amongst themselves are happy and precious moments that I take in silently.

Giving my family my time when they need me most is better than making them wait and then receive my leftover. I try to be patient and calm with my wife and children though it’s easier said than done, but I try my best to preserve the harmony at home so I can work peacefully.

With the new normal, I have to adjust my own mindset, and communication with my spouse.
There are just so many challenges that left me overwhelmed, as a parent and an adult. If I need help, I will talk about it with my wife, or I reach out to friends.

Partnering with my wife in parenting and home-making is vital - take turns to mind the kids and give each other some alone time. We each have equal stakes to help out as we live together as a family.

Family time for me is to give every family member my attention when requested of me. Sometimes I get impatient and fail to acknowledge them. However, I realised that just a few seconds or a couple of minutes gives them the security that I value each of them and that I love them enough to stop whatever I’m doing and to pay attention to them. - Darren, dad to 3 fearless boys and husband to a wife who chooses to see the fun in everything

DADs@HOME: I AM IMPORTANT I’m the storyteller a DADs@HOME: I AM IMPORTANT

I’m the storyteller and "bed-putter". My kids love stories, and they love my stories. Recently we discovered an app which features a spinning wheel, and we place our favourite fairy tales on it. We spin once each and I’ll do a fairy tale mash-up. They love it!

I’m the laundry elf, dishwasher and dryer. My spouse, WL, has eczema on her fingers and is hydrophobic. During my time at home, I do most of the dishes, so that she gets more rest after all the cooking and a long day of looking after the kids. She appreciates this very much!

I’m the food connoisseur and support pillow. WL is a great cook, but sometimes it’s not appreciated by the kids. Words which are not used to describe food sometimes get thrown around by them. I’m glad I’m there to remind her how good a cook she is and also to help the kids remember that. I’m the support pillow who walks out of my work room each time WL or any of the children need a boo-boo hug and kiss.

I’m the “wow” emoticon and “blushing” emoticon. I’m just 1 week into staying home and I’m usually away from the kids most of the time due to work. I’m amazed at how much WL does and sometimes has to put up with everyday at home with the 2 girls. Wow. Wow. Wow. And I thought my job was tough. I won’t last a week doing her job. - YC, dad to 2 lovely girls and husband to an amazing wife.
