The Reggio Emilia philosophy emerged out of the partnership between visionary pedagogists and the passionate parents of the Italian city of Reggio Emilia, where its name was derived. In shaping our children’s experiences, we do not have to merely seek to mitigate what we deem as the undesirable influences of the education system. Through a collective will to embrace more favourable narratives on education, we can effect desired changes to our ecosystem.

The submission for writing for the second round of Parenting the Heart is open.

What This Is About
Adriana Lim Escaño (co-founder of Mums for Life) and Dawn Fung (founder of Homeschool Singapore) started the campaign Parenting the Heart as a response to the parenting hardships of the lockdown during the Circuit Breaker in May 2020. It was a time where parents were flustered about caring for their own at home. Spending long hours with their children while juggling working from home constraints in unusual circumstances heightened the anxieties of parenting. Parenting the Heart featured short form confessional stories about how parents connected with their children at home during the lockdown, and why parenting the heart - of both adult and child - is important work.
In this second round, we want to continue the conversations about the work of loving ourselves and our own. This time, our nation is more resilient and ready to open doors again. What does it mean for the family, especially parents? We would like to invite 60 parents (mums, dads) to write for the 2nd round of Parenting the Heart, Dec 2-Dec 31 2021.
We welcome parents from all walks of life and backgrounds. We ask that you share your story as authentically as you can. Your stories will reflect the gamut of human emotions, from pain, mystery to freedom and contentment. We hope there is a story for a parent out there. Raising children is not a bed of roses. It is a garden of blooms, a different lesson for every season. It is a cultivation of years of sweat and toil, for a reward that money cannot buy.

There has been much research done on the importance of the family structure and stability to a child’s well-being. Anchoring these would be a healthy marriage. The homeschooling life is one arena where marriage can be greatly tested. Spatial boundaries tend to be blurred. Time frontiers, even more fluid. These are increasingly the reality for most families, living under social restrictions due to Covid-19. How do we protect our marriage in this midst?

The recent tragedy at RVHS saddened us. And it also made us come together to want to support parent and child wellness at home where we can. Singapore is a nation made of citizens and residents who care for the well being of the country. We see young people, educators, parents, organisations working alongside to build sensitive dialogues and practices.

In this season, we respond by putting together 3 webinars to intentionally remind ourselves to slow down to love our own. The old adage says it takes a village to raise a child. Perhaps it takes a nation to raise a family. "Loving our Own" at home covers how to build a holistic education system at home for our children, what is going on in their heads, and focusing on our marriages.
